The federal government revealed it has launched the Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) penetration programme as part of efforts to increase domestic gas utilisation and reduce reliance on traditional cooking methods.

This was disclosed by the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas) Mr Ekperikpe Ekpo, noting the programme will empower women and youths by distributing free gas cylinders and promoting the use of LPG as a cleaner and healthier alternative to firewood and kerosene.

Launching the programme for the South West geopolitical zone in Ikeja, Lagos, the Minister said the programme was a key component of the Decade of Gas Initiative, which targets converting one million homes to clean cooking gas by 2030.

“This initiative is a testament to our unwavering commitment to enhancing domestic gas utilisation and improving the quality of life for Nigerians,” Mr Ekpo said.

He emphasised that LPG offers a cleaner and healthier alternative to traditional cooking methods, saying “LPG, commonly known as cooking gas, offers a cleaner and healthier alternative to firewood and kerosene.”

Mr Ekpo also highlighted the economic benefits of the programme.

“Our emphasis on LPG is driven by its potential to boost household energy efficiency, reduce environmental impacts, and stimulate economic growth.”

He encouraged beneficiaries to make full use of the gas cylinders provided, adding that, “I encourage all beneficiaries to make full use of the gas cylinders provided, as this programme is a significant step towards a cleaner, safer, and more sustainable future for our nation.”
