How to Watch the 2026 Ballon d’Or Live from Nigeria
Football’s biggest individual awards night returns on Monday, October 26, with the 2026 Ballon d’Or ceremony taking place at the London Palladium and showing live in Nigeria from 9:00 pm WAT on SuperSport (DStv Ch. 203) and DStv Stream. This year marks the award’s 70th edition and the first time the ceremony will be held in London, paying tribute to Stanley Matthews, the first winner in 1956.
Before the trophy is handed out, the men’s race holds plenty of intrigue. Harry Kane, Lamine Yamal and Kylian Mbappé have all made strong cases, while Rodri and defending champion Ousmane Dembélé remain in the conversation. Their arguments range from goalscoring records to major trophies and performances on the biggest stage. Africa is represented on the 30-man shortlist by Achraf Hakimi and Sadio Mané, and the women’s Ballon d’Or will also be presented on the night.
Kane and Yamal Lead the Conversation
Bookmakers have largely framed the race as a contest between Kane and Yamal. Harry Kane has a compelling case after a remarkable goalscoring season for Bayern Munich and England. He finished 2025/26 with 73 goals in 65 appearances for club and country. He helped Bayern win the Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal double and reach the Champions League semi-finals, and his six World Cup goals took England to their best finish in 60 years. No English player has won the Ballon d’Or since Michael Owen in 2001, adding another dimension to Kane’s pursuit of the award.
Lamine Yamal offers a different argument. The Barcelona forward scored 16 league goals and provided 12 assists, according to LaLiga, as his side retained the title, before being part of Spain’s World Cup-winning side. Named La Liga’s Player of the Season, Yamal has combined individual influence with team success.
Mbappé and the Other Contenders
Kylian Mbappé’s case rests heavily on his individual output. He finished as top scorer in La Liga with 25 goals and in the Champions League with 15. He then won the World Cup Golden Boot with 10, becoming the first player to win it twice and the men’s tournament’s all-time leading scorer with 22 goals. France, however, finished fourth. Real Madrid’s lack of major silverware could count against him, especially when compared with the achievements of Kane and Yamal.
Rodri captained Spain to the World Cup and won the tournament’s Golden Ball, giving the 2024 winner another route into the conversation. Dembélé is looking to defend the award he won in 2025 after helping Paris Saint-Germain retain the Champions League. Their cases underline the central question facing voters: how should individual brilliance be weighed against team success?
What Could Decide the Ballon d’Or?
The award’s criteria place individual performance and decisive impact first, followed by team achievements and trophies, then class and fair play. A jury of journalists, one from each of the top 100 nations in FIFA’s men’s world ranking, ranks 10 players from the 30-man shortlist. Each juror awards 15 points to their first choice and fewer points to each subsequent selection.
That leaves room for different interpretations of the season. Kane has his goals, Yamal has his influence and Spain’s success, and Mbappé has his individual records.
