Two banks located in Apapa, Diamond Bank and Sterling Bank, were destroyed by fire on Wednesday morning by some angry truck drivers after a mobile policeman allegedly shot dead one of their colleagues.
Trouble started when the mobile cop allegedly ordered the deceased driver to move his heavy duty vehicle away from premises of the bank.
Eyewitnesses informed Business Post correspondent that while the driver was allegedly obeying the order reluctantly, an argument ensued, which led to the cop shooting him dead.
The incident attracted other truck drivers, who mobilised and arrived scene of the shooting in large number.
However, the mobile policeman quickly ran into one of the financials for safety and calls by the irate drivers to the financial institution to release him to them fell on deaf ears.
Angered by this, the drivers allegedly set the two banks on fire, destroying properties worth millions of Naira in the process.
One of the lenders affected, Diamond Bank, in a statement issued by its spokesperson, Ezechinyere Anyanwu, said though the situation was under control, it was working with the Nigeria Police Force and other law enforcement agencies to investigate actions leading to the fire incident.
