ntel Rejigs Management Team Ahead of 2026 Relaunch

Nigeria’s pioneering telecoms operator, NatCom Development and Investment Limited (ntel, formerly NITEL), which is eyeing a return from dormancy early next year has restructured its management team.

In August, Business Post reported that the company was making efforts to come back into the fold and take on active players like MTN, Airtel, and Globacom.

The latest play includes the appointment of a new board of directors as it prepares for a commercial relaunch in January 2026.

The new board includes Mr Adeleke Alex-Adedipe, Mr Ayodeji Joshua Richards, Mrs Maryam Mutallab, Mr Olaide Aremu, and Mr Soji Maurice-Diya, who serves as Managing Director/CEO of the rebranded telco. Each individual comes with years of experience and expertise.

The return of the telco is underpinned by a strategic N30 billion injection from the Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON).

Once the dominant pre-GSM era provider with both wireline and mobile services via NITEL and Mtel, the operator fell into prolonged dormancy following the privatization of the Nigerian telecommunications sector.

After NatCom Development & Investment Limited acquired the business for $252.25 million in 2015, ntel struggled to regain traction.

Now, the company is considering a fixed wireless home play as the market entry that might end up preceding an earlier roaming/MVNO play.

The MVNO approach allows ntel to focus on branding, customer experience, and differentiated services, particularly to youth, fintech, and rural prepaid segments without owning costly infrastructure

As per Tech Cabal, Mr T.Y. Danjuma, remains the Chairman, while its legacy director and minority shareholder, Mr Tunde Ayeni, will also be instrumental.

The latest development reflects ntel’s focus on “monetising its nationwide portfolio of telecommunications and real estate assets” as part of efforts to diversify revenue streams and strengthen liquidity ahead of its relaunch.

In a joint statement, the board described the transition as coming at a “defining moment” in ntel’s recovery journey.

“It is a rare privilege to steward ntel at such a defining moment. We are energised by the opportunities ahead and look forward to working closely with management to unlock greater value from our infrastructure and shape a future-focused, sustainable business,” the board said.

“Our goal is clear: to position ntel as a robust, investor-friendly enterprise that delivers on Nigeria’s digital aspirations.”

On his part, Mr Maurice-Diya said the board’s composition “aligns the skills we need with the tasks ahead,” emphasising that strong governance will be key to restoring investor confidence and achieving ntel’s goal of becoming a sustainable, growth-oriented telecom brand in Nigeria’s digital economy.

FoodCourt Pauses Operations as Unpaid Salaries, Debt Mount

FoodCourt

By Adedapo Adesanya

FoodCourt, a Nigerian cloud kitchen startup backed by Y Combinator, has suspended operations after months of unpaid salaries and mounting debts to vendors triggered a staff strike and forced the company to halt customer orders, according to a report by TechCabal.

The publication reported that customers first noticed on March 4 that they could no longer place orders through the FoodCourt app after the company disabled ordering as kitchen workers, delivery personnel and branch staff embarked on strike over unpaid wages. The company also owed outstanding payments to vendors.

By April 19, FoodCourt had temporarily shut its last operating branch after suspending activities across its Lagos and Abuja locations while seeking fresh funding and restructuring the business, according to the report.

The company’s chief executive, Mr Henry Nneji, said the decision to pause operations was not caused by a single issue but by a combination of operational, organisational and working-capital challenges.

“It’s important to clarify that the decision to pause operations wasn’t driven by one single issue. We reached a point where it became clear that continuing to patch those issues while operating wasn’t the right long-term decision,” he said.

“The objective is to build a stronger business than the one that existed before the suspension. We fully intend to bring FoodCourt back,” he added in an emailed response.

The company acknowledged outstanding obligations to employees, vendors, riders and service providers, but declined to disclose the number of affected workers or the total amount owed. It said efforts were underway to resolve the liabilities as part of its restructuring process.

It was also reported that the startup’s financial difficulties worsened after expansion into additional locations increased operating costs, while its cloud kitchen model came under pressure from rising labour, logistics, food and marketing expenses.

Despite the shutdown, Mr Nneji said FoodCourt intends to relaunch after completing its restructuring, adding that the company believes demand for its products remains strong.

Founded in 2021 by Henry Nneji and Paul Adokiye Iruene, FoodCourt operates cloud kitchens under multiple virtual restaurant brands through its consumer app. According to TechCabal, the startup had previously disclosed raising $1.7 million, delivering more than one million meals and reaching $4.3 million in annual recurring revenue by the end of 2024.
