On December 15, 2022, the newly redesigned N200, N500, and N1,000 officially hit circulation, but since then, there have been reports of fake Naira notes in the system.
This has made some Nigerians reject the new banknotes, defeating the essence of the introduction of the currency denominations.
Worried by this, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has released security features of the new N200, N500, and N1,000 to enable Nigerians to differentiate them from counterfeits.
In a notice issued by the bank, it was stated that the new N1,000 note has a portrait watermark in front, with an optically variable ink, which changes from blue to green with a change in the view angle.
Also, the currency denomination has a kinegram with an image of N1,000 and a coat of arms, while at the back of the money, there is a raised intaglio print and windowed metallic security threat.
As for the N500 note, the front has a windowed metallic security thread with a CBN inscription as well as a portrait watermark and CBN 500 watermark. It also has an optically variable ink which changes from blue to green with a change in view angle, and at the back, it has a raised intaglio print of N500.
The N200 note has similar security features to the others. It has a windowed metallic security thread with a CBN inscription, portrait watermark, CBN 200 watermark, raised intaglio print, see-through printing in register, and others.
