tinubu and governors

President Bola Tinubu is holding an emergency meeting with the 36 state governors, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), the Inspector General of Police (IGP) and others at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

It was gathered that the gathering was triggered by the rising cost of living in the country, which is already sparking pockets of protests across the country.

Since Mr Tinubu assumed office in May 2023, the prices of goods and services have reached their highest levels, with inflation hitting 29.90 per cent in January 2024, according to data released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) on Thursday (today).

Earlier today, there was a peaceful demonstration in the Sango-Ota area of Ogun State over economic hardship, with protesters calling on the government to come to their aid.

It is believed that the meeting with the state governors is to discuss ways to address the situation before it degenerates into a nationwide protest, especially at a time when the value of the Naira to the Dollar is crumbling in the parallel market segment of the foreign exchange (FX) market.

Already, Nigerian workers, under the aegis of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), have given President Tinubu two weeks to implement measures his administration promised to make lives meaningful for the citizens.
