The Senate has ordered an investigation into the alleged illegal repatriation of $13.9 billion by MTN between 2006 and 2016 to its home country, South Africa, through its bankers.

At the plenary on Tuesday, Senator Dino Melaye raised a motion calling for the probe of those involved in the alleged act.

Minister of Trade and Investment, Dr Okechukwu Elenemah, was alleged to have been involved in the alleged illegal repatriation, including four banks; Stanbic IBTC, Standard Chartered Bank, Citi Bank and Diamond Bank, according to Mr Melaye.

After the motion was debated and contributions received from the lawmakers, the Senate then directed its Committee on Banking, Insurance and Other Financial Institutions to investigate the matter.
