Nigeria imported 20.9 billion litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), otherwise known as petrol in 2019, according to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).

The statistical body made this known in its latest report on petroleum products importations statistics for 2019 released on Wednesday, May 21.

Giving a breakdown on other refined products, it said that the country also imported 5.2 billion litres of Automotive Gas Oil (AGO), also known as diesel, while 128.1 million litres of Household Kerosene (HHK) in the period under review.

The NBS said 1.1 billion litres of Aviation Turbine Kerosene (ATK) otherwise known as jet fuel were imported as well as 45.9 million litres of Low Pour Fuel Oil (LPFO) used in vehicles as a cheaper alternative to vacuum gas or engine oil and in industries.

The bureau then said 526.1 million litres of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) were imported into the country in the year under review.

The NBS noted that zonal distribution of truck-out volume for 2019 showed that 20.6 billion littres of PMS, 5.2 litres of AGO and 270.2 million litres of HHK, 1.1 billion litres of ATK and 84.5 million litres of LPFO were distributed nationwide.

Business Post had reported earlier that private oil marketers have now been given the green light to import oil and this means there may be an increase to the volume of petroleum products imported into the country this year.
