Nigerian Stocks Rise 1.20% as Investors Reignite Buying Interest

The last trading session of August 2026 ended on a positive note on the floor of the Nigerian Exchange (NGX) Limited, as it rose by 1.20 per cent on Monday.
This growth yesterday was triggered by renewed bargain-hunting in Nigerian stocks by investors, as they mop up equities trading at attractive prices, especially because they have the fundamentals to yield better value in the coming weeks.
Data showed that the banking index gained 3.11 per cent, the consumer goods space rose by 1.72 per cent, the energy sector expanded by 1.35 per cent, and the insurance counter improved by 0.88 per cent, while the industrial goods segment shed 0.65 per cent.
At the close of business, the All-Share Index (ASI) advanced by 2,900.92 points to 244,199.39 points from 241,298.47 points, and the market capitalisation increased by N1.913 trillion to N157.739 trillion from N155.826 trillion.
Yesterday, Omatek recorded the biggest gain after it chalked up 10.00 per cent to trade at N1.65, Ikeja Hotel grew by 9.95 per cent to N42.55, Sovereign Trust Insurance surged by 9.94 per cent to N1.88, Sunu Assurances climbed by 9.86 per cent to N3.12, and Royal Exchange jumped by 9.09 per cent to 96 Kobo.
Conversely, Abbey Bank posted the heaviest loss after it dropped 9.41 per cent to close at N7.70, AVA Capital sank by 7.69 per cent to N6.00, FTN Cocoa depreciated by 6.25 per cent to N7.50, Tantalizers dipped by 4.98 per cent to N3.82, and Consolidated Hallmark slumped by 4.60 per cent to N6.01.
The activity chart was led by Access Holdings, with a turnover of 126.5 million units valued at N4.0 billion, GTCO traded 33.2 million units worth N4.4 billion, UBA exchanged 31.5 million units for N1.5 billion, Nigerian Breweries transacted 31.3 million units valued at N2.2 billion, and Veritas Kapital sold 29.0 million units for N32.2 million.
A total of 606.2 million units worth N38.7 billion exchanged hands in 53,471 deals during the day compared with the 605.2 million valued at N29.9 billion transacted in 38,421 deals traded last Friday. This showed that the trading volume, value, and number of deals soared by 0.17 per cent, 29.43 per cent, and 39.17 per cent, respectively.
