The apex bank chief made this disclosure on Monday at the 25th seminar for Business Editors and Financial Correspondents in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital.
According to him, the amount was what the reserves had as at April 5, 2017, which was last Thursday.
This showed a 2.60 percent increase from the $46.2 billion in the external reserves as at March 31, 2018, according to Mr Emefiele.
Speaking at the seminar, the Governor said he was very optimistic that the foreign reserves would hit $50 billion before the end of this year.
Represented at the event by the newly appointed CBN Deputy Governor in charge of Corporate Services, Mr Edward Adamu, the apex bank chief said his team will continue to ensure proper management of the reserves.
He praised members of the media for being part of the progress in the country, especially with their reportage of the economy and charged them to continue to do more.
He said the role of the media in the economy can never be pushed aside, describing them as key stakeholders and partners in progress.
