Nigeria’s T+1 Market Still Has A One-Day Gap

Investor waiting for mobile share-sale funds to settle

Sell the shares on Monday morning. The portfolio changes at once.

The bank account does not.

That difference will look familiar to anyone moving between an investment app and another mobile service the bizbet mobil page, for example on the same phone: a transaction shown on screen is not automatically settled money. In a brokerage account, the sale may be complete at the quoted price while the cash and securities are still moving through the settlement process.

Nigeria shortened that wait in 2026. It did not remove it.

T+1 means the next business day

Nigeria moved eligible equities and commodities from T+2 to T+1 on 1 June 2026. Under the new cycle, a trade settles one business day after it is executed.

The “T” is the trade date. The “+1” is not a 24-hour countdown; it means settlement normally takes place on the next business day. After the trade is made, the account may show the sale price immediately, even though the cash is not yet available for transfer. The trade has been completed, but the settlement process is still continuing.

Shares sold Expected settlement Important detail
Monday Tuesday Both days must be business days
Friday Monday Assumes Monday is not a holiday
Day before a market holiday Next open business day The closed day does not count
Monday before a Tuesday holiday Wednesday Tuesday is skipped

Settlement for the affected trades takes place at 5pm on T+1. Until then, the trade has been completed at the quoted price, but the transfer of securities and payment is still being processed.

Small distinction. Important afternoon.

The app may show three different balances

A portfolio screen can display sale proceeds within seconds. That does not tell the user what the money can do next.

Look for separate labels:

  • portfolio value;
  • cash or buying power;
  • unsettled proceeds;
  • cash available to withdraw;
  • pending bank transfer.

Some brokers may allow unsettled proceeds to fund another purchase. Withdrawal can remain unavailable until settlement, and the broker may need more time to send the funds after that.

So a large cash figure near the top of the screen can be correct while the withdrawal figure below it remains smaller. Nothing has necessarily gone missing.

Nigeria moved quickly

The market had only recently left T+3 behind.

T+2 went live on 28 November 2025. Six months later, Nigeria switched again, this time to T+1. The Nigerian Exchange described the change as a move towards faster access to funds and lower counterparty exposure.

For an investor, the practical gain is one less business day between trade and settlement.

The trade-off sits behind the screen. Brokers, custodians and clearing systems have less time to confirm instructions and arrange payment. A shorter cycle is quicker, yes, but it also leaves less room to correct missing details.

Currency conversion can add another wait

An investor selling a foreign security may face two separate steps: settlement in the market’s currency, then conversion into the currency needed for withdrawal.

The rate shown when the shares were sold may not be the final conversion rate. There could also be a fee or spread. If the conversion request misses a processing cut-off, the bank transfer may move to the next working period.

This is where mobile interfaces can be misleading without actually being wrong. One screen reports the completed sale; another is waiting for currency and banking work that happens later.

Do not spend money that is still travelling

Before making plans for sale proceeds, check:

  • which settlement cycle applies to the security;
  • the next open business day;
  • whether the cash is settled or merely displayed;
  • the broker’s withdrawal cut-off;
  • any currency conversion step;
  • the expected bank-transfer time.

If an investor later follows a bizbet link for separate leisure spending, unsettled sale proceeds should stay out of that budget. A pending investment balance is not spare cash simply because the app has already coloured it green.

Keep the records apart. That avoids borrowing mentally from money which has not arrived.

The useful figure is lower on the screen

After selling, open the transaction details rather than relying on the portfolio total. Find the execution price, trade date, settlement date and withdrawable amount.

For a Monday trade, Tuesday may be the key day. But if Tuesday is a public holiday, look again.

T+1 is faster than the old cycle. It still has a “plus” in the name for a reason.
