NUPENG Calls Off Strike After Deal With Dangote Refinery

The nationwide strike embarked upon by members of the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas (NUPENG) has been suspended.

The industrial action was called off after the union struck a deal with the management of Dangote Refinery on Tuesday.

NUPENG commenced the two-day strike over allegations that the private crude oil refinery in Lagos was planning to prohibit its drivers from joining labour unions.

The federal government had to intervene in the matter, with the Minister of Labour, Mr Muhammad Maigari Dingyadi, having talks with the two parties.

After lengthy discussions in Abuja, representatives of NUPENG and Dangote Refinery signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to resolve the matter.

It was agreed that workers of the company were free to join any of the recognised labour unions in the country “in line with the provisions of the extant laws,” with the “process of unionization” commencing immediately and to be “completed within two weeks (between September 9 and 22, 2025).”

“Arising from the strike notice, no worker or employee of Dangote Refinery and Petrochemicals will be victimized,” it was further agreed.
