The need for the federal government to put in place proper taxation to increase the revenue of the country so as to spur economic growth has once again been emphasised.
The Auditor-General for the Federation (AGF), Mr Adolphus Aghughu, said this when he received a delegation from the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria (CITN) recently.
The team was led to Mr Aghughu precisely on Thursday, March 11, 2021, by the Chairman/President in Council, Ms Gladys Olajumoke Simplice.
During the visit, the Auditor-General, who is also a fellow of the institute, said tax remains one of the viable sources of revenue generation for any country.
He said policies would be put in place to explore the opportunities in proper taxation, promising that his office will partner with the CITN to ensure complete professionalism in the Nigeria tax system.
He commended the institute for its role in the nation’s tax system, noting that the input of the organisation has been very helpful in the recent tax reforms.
In her remarks, Ms Simplice congratulated Mr Aghughu on his appointment and hoped that the visit would help foster a good working relationship between the two organisations.
She further spoke on the possibility of organising capacity building programmes for staff of the Audit House and then solicited the assistance of the AGF towards the 2021 annual conference of the CITN.
According to her, the CITN, which is the regulatory body for the practice of taxation duties in Nigeria, wants Mr Aghughu to facilitate the sponsorship of his members of staff to the event slated for May 18 to– 21, in Kaduna.
