The management of Seplat Energy Plc has refuted media reports that its 2023 Annual General Meeting (AGM) has been postponed following a court order.
In a statement authorised by its chairman, Mr Basil Omiyi, the company emphasised that the date of its 2023 AGM remains Wednesday, May 3.
It was reported by some media platforms, excluding Business Post, that Justice Inyang Ekwo of the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja restrained the energy firm from holding the meeting pending the hearing and determination of a substantive matter before the court.
According to reports, this followed a motion on notice for interlocutory order moved by a counsel to the plaintiffs, Mr Kalu Onuoha.
It was gathered that some shareholders of Seplat, Boniface Okezie, Bright Nwabuogu, John Isesele, Okonkwo Timothy, and Augustine Ezennachukwu, filed a suit against the organisation and some directors, Mr Roger Thompson Brown, Mr Basil Omiyi, Mr Charles Okeahialam and others.
But Seplat, while reacting, said the reports were deliberately pushed out to “misinform the public and misrepresent the court proceedings,” stressing that the AGM was not suspended as claimed.
“Seplat Energy has become aware of certain media reports which seek to create the impression that the Federal High Court in Abuja has restrained the company from holding its 2023 Annual General Meeting (AGM) in the duplicated petition of FHC/ABJ/PET/8/2023 – Boniface Okezie & 4 others V. Seplat Energy & 9 others.
“These media reports are a deliberate attempt to misinform the public and misrepresent the court proceedings, as the court made no such order suspending the holding of the AGM.
“It is imperative to recall from the company’s announcement of April 28, 2023, that the court did not grant the petitioners’ request to restrain the company from holding its AGM.
“Seplat Energy is working within the purview of the law, with due reference to the Court, and has secured all required approvals,” the statement said.
