Assa North-Ohaji (ANOH) South gas processing plant is expecting to add about 1,200 Megawatts (MW) of electricity to the country’s electricity generation capacity once it commences operations.
This was disclosed by the Managing Director of ANOH Gas Processing Company Limited, Mr Okechukwu Mba, in Port Harcourt recently, adding that the gas plant would increase Nigeria’s electricity generation by 25 per cent.
Mr Mba explained that the availability of gas was capable of increasing the country’s power generation capacity. The company’s gas field is located few kilometres from Port Harcourt in the Ohaji/Egbema Local Government Area of Imo State.
The gas firm, jointly owned by Seplat Plc and the Nigerian Gas Company, a subsidiary of NNPC, when completed, would process 300 million standard cubic feet of gas per day.
“The capacity of the plant we are building is 300 million standard cubic feet per day gas plant.
“At full operation, 300 million standard cubic feet will be sufficient to generate more than 1,200 MW of electricity per day.
“When you look at the level of electricity generation in Nigeria today and you think about the quantum you can get by making gas available.
“Our plant is capable of generating an additional 1,200 megawatts, which is between 20 and 25percent increase in the country’s power generation capacity,” Mr Mba said.
Assa North-Ohaji South field located within Oil Mining Lease (OML) 21 operated by Shell Petrolatum Development Company (SPDC) JV and OML 53 operated by Seplat JV, is expected to contain gas reserves of 4.3 trillion cubic feet in addition to 215 million barrels of condensate.
AGPC is a subsidiary of SEPLAT, a leading gas supplier to the domestic market with the contribution to Nigeria’s power supply put at about 30 per cent.
SEPLAT supports the federal government’s diversification agenda with its contribution to the growth of the nation’s power generation capacity. Delivery of the ANOH project will be a significant contributor to the Nigerian government’s aspiration for increased power generation and diverse industrial and economic growth.
The ANOH gas plant project is premier amongst the 7 Critical Gas Development Projects initiative led by the Ministry of Petroleum and the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation to drive the next phase of growth for the gas business.
