Former Minister of State for Defence, Mr Musiliu Obanikoro, has finally regained his freedom, Punch is reporting.
Mr Obanikoro has been in custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) since he return to Nigeria to honour an invitation from the anti-money laundering agency on October 17, 2016.
He is said to be on his way to his home in Ikoyi, Lagos, after meeting his conditions on Thursday night.
“The EFCC just released Senator Obanikoro around 5pm. He is on his way home now,” Punch quoted an EFCC source as saying in its report.
The former Minister was said to have returned N100 million to the agency to perfect his release, while promising to return about N480 million later. His American and Nigerian passports were reportedly to the EFCC as part of his bail conditions.
Mr Obanikoro was accused by the EFCC of receiving N4.7 billion through the Office of the National Security Adviser in 2014 and pocketing N785 million, giving the balance to Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti State and Mr Iyiola Omisore to prosecute the 2014 governorship election in Ekiti and Osun State respectively.
