BREAKING: INEC Declares Attempt to Recall Dino Melaye a Failure

By Dipo Olowookere

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has disclosed that Senator Dino Melaye remains the lawmaker representing the people of Kogi West Senatorial District at the upper chamber of the National Assembly.

This followed failure of the electoral body to obtain the required signature to approve the recall of the senator, who is presently receiving treatment at a hospital in Abuja.

On Saturday, April 28, 2018, INEC conducted verification of signatures to the petition for the recall of Mr Melaye.

Announcing outcome of the exercise on Sunday morning, INEC Declaration Officer, Professor Ukertor Gabriel Moti, said the commission could only verify signatures of 18,742 of the 189,870 persons on the petition.

This, according to him, represents 5.34 percent of the total number of registered voters in the constituency.

Professor Moti said as a result of this, this attempt to recall Mr Melaye from the National Assembly can no longer continue because it falls short of the needed requirement.

“Professor Ukertor Gabriel Moti, affirm that the information on verification of signatures to the petition for the recall of Senator Dino David Melaye of Kogi West Senatorial District has taken place on this day, 28th day of April 2018, and that the verified signatures is 5.34 percent of the total number of registered voters in the constituency and has therefore not satisfied a requirement of the law for a referendum,” Professor Moti said.

Many believe the recall process was instituted by the Governor of Kogi State over his disagreement with the lawmaker.

Mr Melaye has been openly critical of Governor Yahaya Bello’s government as well as that of President Muhammadu Buhari and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), the party the senator belongs to.
