On Friday, President Muhammadu Buhari assented to the Endangered Species Control of International Trade and Traffic Amendment Act 2016.
The act is aimed at protecting endangered species in the country.
With the act signed into law by the President, it would now be a serious offence for anyone to kill or trade them.
According to the Senior Special Assistant to the President on National Assembly Matters (Senate), Mr Ita Enang, the National Assembly only recently amended the act to make violations meet up with present realities.
Addressing newsmen after the signing ceremony, Mr Enang revealed that the Endangered Species Control of International Trade and Traffic Amendment Act 2016 was one of the 10 bills forwarded by the National Assembly to the President.
He noted that with the approval, the President had completed work on all the bills sent to him for his consent.
According to him, Mr Buhari has so far signed 17 bills into law in 2016, which also include the Prevention of Crime Amendment Act 2016; the National Crop Varieties and Livestock Breeds (Registration) Amendment Act 2016; the Telecommunications and Postal Offences Amendment Act 2016; and the National Agricultural Land Development Authority Amendment Act 2016 amongst others.
