The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) said it has commenced investigation into the cause of the minor fire outbreak at its branch in Jos, Plateau State on Tuesday morning.

At about 9:15am today, an inferno erupted on the second floor of the building, but the prompt response of officials of the apex bank ensured that it was quickly subdued, with minimal or no damage done.

It was gathered that members of staff of the security unit of the central bank, upon being notified of the fire incident, traced it to an air conditioner installed in the inverter room in the property.

Before officials of the fire service could arrive, the situation was brought under control, allowing normal operations to resume almost immediately.

Business Post learned that before the inferno started, skeletal staff on essential duty were working at the branch and when the incident occurred, they were promptly evacuated from the building to the muster point in line with the apex bank’s fire drill and protocol.

In a statement issued by the CBN, it was stated that immediately after the fire happened, “Our Branch Controller quickly called the Fire Service at about 9:19am.

“However, before the arrival of men of the fire service, the Bank’s security unit, relying on information from the Fire Alarm Dashboard, traced the fire to an air conditioner installed in the inverter room on the second floor of the building. They swiftly put out the fire with extinguishers and hydrants installed in the building.”

The statement said, “The affected room has since been cordoned off for further investigation, while normal work has resumed at the branch.”

Concluding, the central bank said, “We hereby assure the general public that the minor fire has been effectively put out and no damage was done to any records of the bank.”
