As the issue of herdsmen/farmers disagreements continues to rise in the southern part of Nigeria, the Conference of Nigeria Political Parties (CNPP) has urged the new service chiefs to ensure the safety of the people, especially farmers.

While congratulating the new appointees, CNPP also hailed President Muhammadu Buhari for removing the former occupiers of the positions, describing this action as the right thing for the country.

However, the group, in a statement signed by its Secretary-General, Mr Willy Ezugwu, urged the new security chiefs to inject fresh ideas into the war against insurgency and criminality in Nigeria.

“The former security chiefs obviously failed to live up to their calling and preferred winning the war against insurgency on pages of the newspapers than in the battlefield.

“We also commend President Muhammadu Buhari for tilting towards a balance in the appointment and reflecting federal character in the new appointment.

“We urge the new security bosses to ensure that ordinary citizens, especially the farmers, can go about their lawful activities in all parts of the country without fear of insurgent or killer herdsmen.

“The life of every Nigerian matter and should be accounted for at any time as it is the primary responsibility of government to protect the lives and property of Nigerians,” CNPP said.

Expressing confidence in the new nominees, the CNPP stated that, “we are confident that fresh ideas and more encompassing strategies will be the order of the day as we expect a boost to the morale of the military personnel in the days ahead”.

On January, 26, the President carried out the wishes of the people by removing the former service chiefs and appointing new ones.

“PMB appoints new Service Chiefs. Maj Gen LEO Irabor, CDS, Maj Gen I Attahiru, Army, Rear Adm AZ Gambo, Navy, AVM IO Amao, Air Force.

“He congratulates outgoing Service Chiefs on efforts to bring enduring peace to the country,” the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr Femi Adesina, had announced in a statement.
