Justice Hamza Muazu of the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, has rejected an application by embattled former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Mr Godwin Emefiele, for permission to travel to the United Kingdom for a follow-up medical checkup.
Justice Muazu, in a ruling, held among others, that Mr Emefiele failed to supply sufficient materials to show that the medical trip was essential and unavoidable.
Justice Muazu found that while Mr Emefiele claimed there was an invitation for him to travel to the UK for medical attention, he failed to tender a copy in court.
The judge also found that Mr Emefiele did not show that his ailment could not be attended to in the country, noting that he was also facing charges in three other courts.
Recall that the embattled banker is under a series of trials for alleged abuse of office during his time as the head of the apex bank between 2014 and 2023.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) whilst investigating the banker alleged that monumental fraud was carried out by Mr Emefiele and his allies.
The anti-graft agency also said it discovered a huge amount of money warehoused and concealed in the account of (DL) domiciled in Titan Trust Bank. This is in addition to other discoveries, which he has been ordered to forfeit, including $1.4 million and over N11 billion.
