The Area Controller of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) Western Marine Command, Comptroller Abubakar Umar, has said proceeds from the auctioning of 30 kegs of  Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), otherwise known as petrol, recently seized from smugglers, have been remitted to the federation accounts.

Mr Umar made this disclosure while addressing journalists in Apapa Lagos.

He said the 30 kegs of petrol were auctioned after securing approval from the headquarters of the agency.

He listed other items intercepted by his men as 32 sacks of cannabis Sativa with a street value of N168,000,000, 828 bags of foreign rice suspected to be smuggled from the Benin Republic with a  Duty Paid Value (DPV) of N29,684,000, 8 kegs of vegetable oil, 8 packs of spaghetti noodles, 250 sachets of pepper onion tomato, 71 pairs of second-hand shoes, 10 sacks of second-hand clothing and 4 boats and 2 engines as means of conveyance.

Mr Umar noted that the total DPV of the seizures is N190,145,500.

“Due to the nature of the seized item (PMS), the command on the approval of the headquarters auctioned the product and the amount generated as fees have been remitted to the federation accounts,” he said in a statement issued on Friday.

However, it was emphasised that with the approval of the Comptroller General of Customs (CGC), the seized cannabis Sativa will be handed over to the Commander, Marine Unit of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), as part of the existing inter-agency collaboration between the two organisations.

In his remarks, the CGC, Mr Hameed Ibrahim Ali, attributed the successes recorded to the commitment of the officers of the command and inter-agency collaboration.

He reassured his commitment to addressing smuggling activities and noted that collaboration with the traditional community leaders would be sustained for mutually beneficial reasons.

“As the Area Controller of the Command, I would continue to operate an open-door policy, give a sense of belonging to all Officers/Men as well as instil discipline, for us to better fulfil the command’s mandate,” Mr Ali said.
