The former Director-General of the Obi-Datti campaign organisation, Mr Doyin Okupe, has been arrested by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS).

A notice from one of his lawyers, Mr Tolu Babaleye, disclosed that the former chieftain of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was picked up by the secret police at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos, on Thursday.

According to the message, Mr Okupe, who resigned his appointment as the DG of the Labour Party presidential campaign council recently, was apprehended by the DSS on his way for medical attention in London, the United Kingdom.

It was stated that what the former aide to former President Goodluck Jonathan was arrested for was a matter that had been settled.

Recalled that Mr Okupe stepped down as the DG of the campaign council for the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Mr Peter Obi, after a federal high court in Abuja convicted him for violating Money Laundering Act by accepting cash payment of over N700 million without going through a bank.

After his conviction and payment of a fine, he announced his resignation from the campaign team of the former Governor of Anambra State.

“The information reaching me now is that Dr Doyin Okupe has been arrested at Lagos Airport by the DSS on his way to London.

“The reason, according to the source, is that he was asked to produce evidence that the Federal High Court Abuja has freed him from the case in which he was convicted and paid fine to the knowledge of the whole world and was allowed to go home. When will this harassment stop? Who is after Dr Doyin Okupe?

“As at today, the man has no case to answer anywhere, I hereby demand that the DSS should release my client immediately as it is a violation of his freedom of movement, right to liberty and dignity of human person. This is unfair as the man health is fast failing!” Mr Babaleye said.
