The federal government is targeting increased visibility for businesses across the country with the launch of the National Digital Alphanumeric Postcode System.

The Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Mr Bosun Tijani, announced the launch in a post on X on Thursday, saying the system would make locations across Nigeria easier to identify and connect people and businesses to services and opportunities.

Operated by the Nigerian Postal Service, the system assigns a unique 11-character digital postcode to every addressable building in Nigeria, providing a precise, GIS-enabled reference for identifying locations.

Mr Tijani said the system would help businesses reach customers beyond their immediate neighbourhoods, while enabling families to provide accurate locations during emergencies and government agencies to reach communities with essential services.

“Every Nigerian deserves to be found. Every business deserves the chance to reach its customers. And every community deserves to be within reach of opportunity,” he said.

He added that accurate postcodes would form part of the infrastructure needed to support President Bola Tinubu’s ambition of building a $1 trillion economy.

“As we work towards (President Bola Tinubu’s) ambition for a $1 trillion economy, we must build the foundations that allow more Nigerians to participate, trade and prosper. This is one of those foundations,” Mr Tijani said.
