Honeywell Deploys AI Platform at Dangote Refinery, Targets $60m Annual Benefits
By Adedapo Adesanya
Honeywell Technologies has launched a new industrial artificial intelligence (AI) platform at the Dangote Petroleum Refinery in Lagos, targeting improved productivity and annual gross operational benefits of about $60 million when the facility reaches full capacity.
The platform, known as Forge Plant Cognition, will integrate capabilities from NVIDIA and Dell Technologies to enhance productivity and profitability at the complex industrial facility, it said in a statement on Monday.
According to the company, preliminary estimates suggest that the AI platform could deliver operational benefits exceeding 29 cents per barrel processed at the refinery, translating to approximately $60 million annually at full-capacity throughput.
Honeywell noted that the estimates were preliminary and not guaranteed.
The deployment comes as the refinery plans to expand its nameplate capacity from 700,000 barrels per day to 1.4 million barrels per day by 2028, with Honeywell already supporting the expansion project.
The refinery last year tapped Honeywell to provide services and help double its refining capacity to 1.4 million barrels per day by the target date, overtaking Reliance’s Jamnagar Refinery in Gujarat, India, which has a refining capacity of 1.24 million barrels per day.
The Dangote refinery, located in the Lekki area of Lagos State, is one of the key components of Nigeria’s efforts to strengthen domestic petroleum refining capacity and reduce dependence on imported refined products.
Beyond Nigeria, Honeywell has also been selected to support Dangote Group’s plans to build a new mega-refinery in Lamu County, Kenya.
