JUST IN: Meranda Resigns as Lagos Assembly Speaker After 49 Days

The Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mrs Mojisola Meranda, has resigned from the position after 49 days in office and becoming the first female to occupy the position in the state.

The lawmaker from Apapa stepped down from the position after pressure from chieftains of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state, particularly the Governor Advisory Council (GAC).

Reports reaching us indicate that Mrs Meranda has now been re-elected as the Deputy Speaker of the Lagos Assembly.

Recall that on January 13, 2025, Mr Mudashiru Obasa was impeached as the Speaker of the state parliament by 36 members and Mrs Meranda elected as his replacement.

Mr Obasa was removed while he was in the United States of America (USA).

However, when he returned to the country, he assured his supporters that he was still in office, describing his removal as illegal.

Several meetings have been held to resolve the crisis rocking the Lagos Assembly and from indications, Mrs Meranda has been asked to resign to allow Mr Obasa to be elected as Speaker for him to have the honour to formally resign to allow for a new Speaker.
