Lagos State Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation has organized a one-day training programme for parents of children with disability in the state on how to manage and cater for their children.

Welcoming participants at the opening of the programme, Commissioner for the Ministry, Mrs Lola Akande, stated that “in order to ensure that all children are adequately catered for, special consideration must be given to children with disability, which could be achieved by training their parents on signs to watch at the onset of disability, what to do, referral activities and networking as well as ways of adjusting to living with them.”

Represented by the Permanent Secretary, Mrs Folasade Adesoye, the Commissioner said the workshop would equip parents with necessary tools and information needed for detection of early signs of any form of challenges that may be encountered from birth to nurturing children through adulthood, adding that the training would also expose the parents to agencies of government that could be of assistance to them.

In her remarks, Dr Yinka Akindayomi, CEO, Child Development Centre and former Consultant at the Ministry’s Ketu Special Children Centre (KSCC), commended the State Government for the initiative, stressing that the programme would be of enormous benefits in helping to alleviate the medical and psychological hardships as well as suffering faced by children with disability and their parents.

While stating that it is the responsibility of parents with such children to cater for them, Dr Akindayomi also emphasised that the Government must support them, therefore necessitating exchange of information and networking amongst stakeholders.
