Workers in the country under the aegis of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have threatened to undergo a nationwide strike over the assault on the NLC President, Mr Joe Ajaero, on Wednesday in Imo State.
The labour leader was beaten blue-black on November 1, 2023, in Owerri, the Imo State capital, by some thugs alleged to be sponsored by the state government.
It was also alleged that the police supervised the beating before he was taken away, though the Imo State Police Command has denied having a hand in the incident.
The labour leader was later taken to the hospital after the assault. He was in the state, where he hails from, for a protest against the government of Governor Hope Uzodinma, over alleged non-payment of workers’ salaries.
At a press briefing on Friday, the leadership of the two leading unions said Nigerian workers would down tools on Wednesday, November 8, 2023, if the federal government fails to meet its six-point demands.
The trade union organisations want the immediate removal of the Commissioner of Police in Imo State, and the Area Commander, among others, for their alleged complicity in the brutalisation and humiliation of Mr Ajaero and other workers.
