The Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for Adamawa State, Mr Hudu Yunusa-Ari, has been arrested by the police.

His arrest was confirmed by the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) in a statement signed on Tuesday, May 2, 2023, by its spokesman, Mr Olumuyiwa Adejobi, a Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP).

Mr Yunusa-Ari made a controversial announcement last at the supplementary governorship election in Adamawa State.

He announced the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Ms Aisha Dahiru Ahmed, otherwise known as Binani, as winner of the exercise without reading out the figures of the election.

The incumbent Governor of the state, Mr Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, was later declared as the authentic winner of the gubernatorial poll for scoring the highest number of votes.

Since he made the announcement, which was upturned by the INEC, Mr Yunusa-Ari has been in hiding. He failed to appear before his employers despite being summoned, which forced the police to move into action.

In the statement today, the police said Mr Yunusa-Ari, a lawyer, is currently in its custody.

It was disclosed that he was “arrested by the Police Election Planning, Monitoring, and Evaluation Team in Abuja on Tuesday 2nd May, 2023” and is being interrogated “to ascertain the motives and motivations behind his alleged improper actions during the supplementary elections in Adamawa State.”

“In addition, other officials and individuals culpable in the saga are being interrogated by the team.

The Inspector-General of Police has given clear assurance that every individual involved/indicted in the matter will be apprehended and investigated in line with the provisions of the law for possible prosecution.

“The Inspector-General of Police has assured of the commitment of the Force to ensuring that justice is served in this case and that all guilty parties are brought to justice,” Mr Adejobi said in the statement.
