The Rivers State House of Assembly complex on Moscow Road in Port Harcourt has been pulled down by the state government.

The building was demolished on Wednesday morning a few weeks after a part of the property was rocked by an explosion amid political tensions in the oil-rich state.

Governor Sim Fubara and his predecessor, Mr Nyesom Wike, have been at loggerheads over the control of the political structure of the Niger Delta state.

After the fire incident at the Assembly complex, the state government promised to renovate it.

On Monday, 27 of the 32 members of the House of Assembly defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

It was gathered that this morning, as early as 5 am, about five bulldozers, excavators, and other heavy-duty machines were brought to the assembly complex for the action at about 7:30 am.

Recall that on Tuesday, the factional Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Mr Edison Ehie, secured an interim injunction to stop his counterpart, who leads the defected members, Mr Martins Amaewhule, and the Deputy Speaker, Mr Dumle Maol, from functioning.

The court order was secured by Mr Ehie from Justice M.W. Danagogo of the Rivers State High Court.
