One of the main proponents of the Yoruba Nation agitators, Mr Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, has been arrested by security officials.
The Yoruba freedom fighter was apprehended by operatives in the neighbouring Cotonou, Benin Republic and is expected to be shipped back into Nigeria very soon.
The residence of Igboho in Ibadan, Oyo State, was raided by men of Nigeria’s secret police, the Department of State Service (DSS) on July 1, 2021, just a few days to a rally in Lagos State.
During the invasion, which occurred in the dead of the night, the DSS officials killed two persons and arrested a dozen of his associates in the building. However, Igboho managed to escape. The Nigerian government, thereafter declared him wanted and advised him to surrender himself to any nearest police station.
A few days ago, the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) claimed it got intel that Igboho was planning to secure another passport after his original was taken during the DSS raid.
On Tuesday morning, several reports in Nigeria claimed the Yoruba freedom fighter was picked up on Monday night in the Benin Republic while attempting to escape to Germany.
“Sunday Igboho has been arrested in Cotonou. He was arrested about an hour ago.
“He was supposed to travel to Germany through Cotonou this night. He wanted to leave Africa through Cotonou. He was arrested by security operatives in Cotonou.
“They are planning to bring him back to Nigeria,” Sahara Reporters quoted a source as saying.
