Shun Drug Abuse, Cultism, Social Vices—Alimosho LG Chair

Youth in the Alimosho Local Government Area of Lagos State have been advised to shun drug abuse, cultism, and social vices.

This advice was given by the council chief, Mr Akinpelu Ibrahim Johnson, on Wednesday at an event to commemorate International Youth Day.

He used the occasion to stress the importance of responsible behaviour among young people, encouraging them to make positive choices that would contribute to their personal development and the overall progress of the local government.

“I want to encourage you to pay attentive attention to the experts as they deliver their lectures and ensure you learn something meaningful to plan your lives and cultivate the habits of positive living,” Mr Johnson, represented by the Council Manager, Mr Rafiu Lawal, said at the programme themed Youth Empowerment for a Drug-Free and Safe Society.

He disclosed that the event was designed to expose young people to important issues, including substance abuse prevention and intervention, personal safety, female hygiene, and financial literacy.

The programme featured expert-led sessions and sensitisation activities focused on substance abuse prevention, safety, female hygiene, and financial literacy, providing participants with practical knowledge aimed at promoting responsible and productive lifestyles.

The Supervisor for Youth and Social Development for the council, Mr Korede Owojori, described the celebration as an opportunity to recognise the energy, talents, and potential of young people in Alimosho.

He expressed his appreciation to all participants and stakeholders who attended the programme, noting that it was his first International Youth Day celebration since assuming office as Supervisor for Youth and Social Development.

“To all our youth, this programme is for you: maintain upright behaviour, shun cultism, say no to drug abuse, and avoid all forms of social vices,” he stated, appealing to partners and stakeholders in youth development to collaborate with the local government in promoting qualitative education, sports, recreational facilities, and impactful youth empowerment programmes.

According to him, meaningful youth participation is essential to the socio-economic development of society. He urged all stakeholders to ensure that young people are adequately equipped and involved in nation-building, stressing that investment in youth development remains an investment in the future.

“Let us get our young people seriously involved in nation-building and socio-economic development because when you build the youth, you build the nation,” he said.
