The victory of Mr Godwin Obaseki as the Edo State Governor has been confirmed by the Supreme Court.
In a lead judgement delivered on Monday by the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Walter Onnoghen, the apex court held that Mr Obaseki was duly elected as Governor of the South-South state.
Mr Obaseki contested the gubernatorial election in Edo State under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) on September 28, 2016.
He defeated candidate of the opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Mr Osagie Ize-Iyamu.
But after the polls, Mr Ize-Iyamu challenged his opponent’s victory at the election tribunal, alleging irregularities and gross non-compliance with the Electoral Act.
His appeal at both the Edo State Election Petitions Tribunal and the Appeal Court were dismissed, which forced him to proceed to the Supreme Court to remove the Governor.
