The new National Minimum Wage Bill has been signed into law by President Muhammadu Buhari, multiple reports suggest.

The bill became effective after the President assented to it on Thursday, April 18, 2019, information from those close to Mr Buhari indicated.

The Personal Assistant to Mr President on New Media, Mr Bashir Ahmad, posted on Twitter a while ago that, “President @MBuhari has signed the National Minimum Wage Bill into law.”

With this development, the least amount an employee working in the country can earn as a monthly pay is N30,000.

However, this applies only to those working in an organisation having more than 25 persons in its workforce.

The Minimum Wage Repeal and Re-Enactment Act, 2019 was recently passed by the National Assembly and transmitted to President Buhari for his assent so as to become a law in Nigeria.

The Senior Special Assistant to the President on National Assembly Matters (Senate), Mr Ita Enang, informed State House correspondents on Thursday in Abuja that his boss signed the Minimum Wage Repeal and Re-Enactment Act, 2019 at the Aso Villa in Abuja on April 18, 2019.

He explained that the law gives workers the right to sue an employer to recover the balance or authorise the Minister of Labour to take action against such an employer in the event of a refusal to pay the stipulated wage.

Business Post reports that the new N30,000 minimum wage became effective from Thursday, April 18, 2019.
