European Central Bank (ECB) President, Ms Christine Lagarde, is expected to step down in February 2027, nine months before the end of her eight-year term in October 2027.

Her anticipated departure follows months of speculation about an early exit and could trigger a major leadership reshuffle at the ECB, which is facing renewed inflationary pressures.

Ms Lagarde’s tenure has been marked by several major economic and geopolitical developments, including the COVID-19 pandemic, Russia’s war in Ukraine, the sharpest inflation shock in a generation and trade tensions with the United States.

The 70-year-old earlier disclosed that she had initially expected to spend five years in Frankfurt when she agreed to take up the position following discussions with French President Emmanuel Macron.

She would become the second ECB president to leave office before completing a full term.

The bank’s first president, Mr Wim Duisenberg, departed after five years following a political understanding reached at the beginning of the European monetary union.

According to reports, Ms Lagarde has been in talks to chair the World Economic Forum (WEF).

Her expected departure comes amid other changes to the ECB’s leadership.

An executive board member, Ms Isabel Schnabel, is due to leave her position in January, a year before the end of her term, to take up a senior role at the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

Meanwhile, ECB Chief Economist Mr Philip Lane’s term is scheduled to expire in May.
