Popular Nigerian musical legend, Majekodunmi Fasheke, popularly known as Majek Fashek, is dead.
The news of his demise was officially announced by his manager, Mr Omenka Uzoma, early Tuesday, June 2, 2020, via an Instagram post.
Mr Fashek died on June 1, 2020 at 71 in the United States, after battling an unknown illness.
Mr Uzoma announced that Majek Fashek “has gone to be with the Lord his Maker.”
“Today, [I] been having pressure calls, well it is true that the African No 1 Legendary ICON has gone to be with the LORD his Maker.
“Let celebrate him, his achievements, and his family, whatever decisions made by his immediate family will be notified.” He said.
Until his death, he was one of Nigeria’s surviving Reggae music legend. Majek attracted international attention in 1987, with his hit song, ‘Send down the Rain.’
Born in February 1949 in Benin City to an Edo (Old Bendel) State mother and a Ijesha father,(Osun State, Western Nigeria), he identifies with his Benin roots.
His musical career kick-started in the early 1980s and he released four albums: Prisoner of Conscience (1989); Spirit of Love (1991); Rainmaker (1997); and Little Patience (2005).
His career was marred with him battling drug addiction but he was admitted into a drug rehabilitation centre in Abuja and recovered.
