Nigerian born New Zealand professional mixed martial artist, Israel Adesanya, inflicted the fifth professional defeat on his Cuban counterpart, Yoel Romero, in the early hours of Sunday (Nigerian Time).

Adesanya, whose parents are from Ogun State in Nigeria, beat Romero to retain his UFC middleweight crown during a UFC 248 fight in Las Vegas, USA.

The Nigerian based in Auckland has now won all his 19 professional fights, while his 42-year old opponent has lost five out of 13.

At today’s fight, the judges scored the five-round match held at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas 48-47, 48-47, 49-46 in favour of Adesanya, who outclassed Romero.

The Kiwi had a rough start, but he was able to get back on his feet later on to humble the veteran fighter, who was determined to be the first fighter to defeat Adesanya, who has been phenomena.

In the first round, Adesanya could only manage three blows out of the seven and this continued to the second round.

It was until in the third round that Adesanya started to display some of his killer moves, giving the spectators, who were already complaining of lack of action, something to savour till the end of the match.

Last April, Adesanya became the UFC interim middleweight champion after defeating Kevin Gastelum by unanimous decision at UFC 236 in Atlanta, Georgia.

Six months after, he beat New Zealand-born Australian Robert Whittaker at UFC 243 in Melbourne to become the undisputed champion.
