Crystal Palace Edge Rayo Vallecano to Clinch Conference League Title

English top-flight football club, Crystal Palace, won their first European trophy as the South London club edged out Spanish side Rayo Vallecano in the Conference League final following a lone strike from Jean-Philippe Mateta.
The French striker turned home a close-range winner on the rebound from an Adam Wharton strike early in the second half at Red Bull Arena, the home of German club RB Leipzig.
With the triumph, outgoing Palace boss Oliver Glasner leaves with the FA Cup, Community Shield and now Conference League in his CV, in a remarkable two-and-a-half-year spell at Selhurst Park.
The final was very calm with minimal chances. Rayo Vallecano striker Alemao turned a half-decent opportunity wide before Unai Lopez placed an effort past the post in the La Liga outfit’s best opportunities of the first half.
However, the best chance of the opening 45 minutes fell to Crystal Palace just before the break when Tyrick Mitchell headed wide after Wharton had found him with a superb ball into the box.
Palace took the lead just six minutes into the second half when Wharton’s strike was palmed into Mateta’s path by Vallecano goalkeeper Augusto Batalla, and the forward diverted it into the net.
It was Mateta’s 16th goal of the season for Palace – and he almost left the club in January before a knee injury halted a move to AC Milan.
Yeremy Pino then hit both posts with a free-kick before he almost set up a second goal for Mateta, which Batalla saved to keep the game at 1-0.
Vallecano, who have the lowest budget in La Liga, struggled to create any real chances late on as Palace held on for their historic moment – and delivered for Glasner in his final game as Eagles boss.
Crystal Palace had never won a major trophy until last season’s FA Cup success against Manchester City – and now have two in two seasons after opening the season with the Community Shield win over Arne Slot’s Liverpool.
Glasner and Palace’s glory this term comes despite the loss of two key players, with Eberechi Eze sold to Arsenal last summer and Marc Guehi joining City in January.
The triumph also marks a blessing in disguise for Crystal Palace, which were denied entry to the Europa League over multi-club issues last summer (and were replaced by Nottingham Forest. This is as a result of shareholder John Textor, who owned a significant stake in Crystal Palace while also controlling Olympique Lyonnais, and both clubs qualified for the Europa League.
UEFA’s rules prohibit one person or entity from having “control or influence” over two clubs in the same competition, to protect sporting integrity.
Nigeria’s Super Falcons will be looking to bounce back when they face Zambia in their second Group C match at the ongoing WAFCON 2026 in Morocco, following a shock 3-2 defeat to Malawi in their opening game. The defending champions will be hoping to get their title defence back on track with a crucial result against the Copper Queens. Friday, Group B action will see South Africa take on Ivory Coast at 6:00 pm, with the 2022 champions looking to respond after their surprise 2-1 defeat to Tanzania in their opening game. Later at 9:00 pm, Burkina Faso will face Tanzania in another Group B encounter. Tanzania will be looking to continue their impressive start after their opening victory, while Burkina Faso will be searching for a response following their heavy defeat to Ivory Coast.
Saturday brings the next round of Group C fixtures, with Egypt taking on Malawi before Nigeria face Zambia. Malawi will enter their encounter with Egypt full of confidence after their historic 3-2 victory over the Super Falcons, while Egypt will be looking to recover from their opening defeat to Zambia.
The Super Falcons, meanwhile, will be aiming to bounce back when they face Zambia at 9:00 pm. Nigeria suffered a disappointing 3-2 defeat to Malawi in their opening game, while Zambia began their campaign in impressive fashion with a commanding 6-0 victory over Egypt. The encounter presents an important opportunity for Nigeria to get their campaign back on track, while Zambia will be looking to maintain their winning momentum.
Sunday’s action will bring Group D into focus, with Ghana facing Cameroon before Mali take on tournament debutants Cape Verde. Ghana started their campaign with a 2-0 victory over Cape Verde, while Cameroon secured a 2-1 win against Mali. Both sides will be looking to build on those results as the group stage continues.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has called on its members to review a controversial plan by the Federation of International Football Association (FIFA) to sell off stakes in its major competitions, including the World Cup.
“The CAF President, Dr Patrice Motsepe, will host a meeting of the CAF executive committee next week to… assess and evaluate the proposed FIFA Forward Enterprise initiative,” CAF said in a statement late on Wednesday.
The world football governing body on Tuesday announced plans to create a commercial subsidiary to run its biggest events, such as the World Cup and Club World Cup.
Under the proposal, private investors would be allowed to acquire stakes in the company but would remain minority shareholders, FIFA said.
The governing body hopes to raise up to $4.2 billion based on a valuation of $20 billion for FFE.
If approved, the project could provide each of FIFA’s 211 member associations with a one-off payment of $20 million in early 2027 and increase their funding allocation for the 2027-2030 cycle from $8 million to $20 million.
FIFA president, Mr Gianni Infantino, on Wednesday described the initiative as a “golden opportunity to turbocharge the development of the game globally.”
However, the proposal has drawn criticisms from several leading European federations and European Union officials, who view it as another step in the commercialisation of sport and have raised concerns over potential conflicts of interest.
The Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) had claimed that FIFA officials were using the opportunity to enrich themselves and their friends.
The Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF) and the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) have also expressed concern that the proposal was made public before FIFA’s 211 member associations were fully consulted.
CAF said it remained “committed to continue consulting and together with its member associations… in support of increasing financial and other resources for the development and growth of football in Africa and worldwide.”
