All the 52 matches of the 2023 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) to be hosted by Cote d’Ivoire will be broadcast live to Nigerians by the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA).
The national broadcast platform confirmed this development in a post on its verified X (formerly Twitter) page on Wednesday morning.
A few days ago, MultiChoice Nigeria, the owner of the popular pay TV platform, DStv, announced that it would not be airing the matches live in Nigeria because it failed to secure the broadcast rights.
This announcement did not go down well with many subscribers of the platform, who had thought they would see the football tournament in quality images.
But the NTA has said it would show the matches after sealing a deal with Afro Sports.
“NTA signs memorandum of understanding with Afro Sports for transmission of 52 matches of Africa Cup of Nations in Cote d’Ivoire,” the message from the federal government-owned television station said.
The 2023 AFCON, which was originally scheduled for last year, will begin on Saturday, January 13, 2024, and end on Sunday, February 11, 2024.
Nigeria is participating in the competition and will look to win it this year for the fourth time since the mundial commenced in February 1957 in Khartoum, Sudan.
