SuperSport Won’t Broadcast 2023 AFCON After CAF Snub

By Adedapo Adesanya
Africa’s leading sports broadcaster, SuperSport Channel, has announced that it would not broadcast the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2023 scheduled for January 13 through February 11, 2024.
In a statement seen by Business Post on Wednesday, Multichoice, the parent company of DSTV, Africa’s largest Pay TV outlet, said this is “because the channel has not secured the rights to broadcast the tournament.”
This newspaper reports that the hosting rights were granted to Togolese broadcaster, New World TV, by the Confederation of African Football (CAF), the region’s footballing authority on December 3, 2023. This followed a highly competitive tender process, a statement from CAF said.
The news was met with heartbreak from fans across the continent who had been expecting that the tournament would be aired on DStv.
SuperSport added, “However, AFCON 2023 games will be available through our partner broadcast stations on Free to Air (FTA) channels.”
It affirmed its commitment to ensuring football fans across Africa continue to enjoy unrivalled access to entertainment and football games available on DStv and GOtv platforms including, the Premier League, LaLiga, Serie A, Zambian Super League, and many more of football’s most prestigious competitions.

Digital Activities Resistant to Full Automation: A Human-Centric Perspective

The world is moving toward automating tasks in workplaces so that employees spend less time on repetitive work. Beyond this, most industries try to take advantage of smart solutions and introduce automated activities as replacements for those involving human input. And although the hype is there, we’re more than convinced that some digital activities, despite being fully online, will not say goodbye to humans, as that’s what their customers want. Let’s dig deeper.
Human Interaction in Online Casino Entertainment
In online gambling, live dealer games show how people make the difference. These are casino games like roulette, blackjack, and baccarat, run by real dealers and streamed with high-quality video. Instead of relying on computer numbers, you see a human shuffle cards or spin the wheel in real time. Players can place bets and even chat with the dealer or other players, which brings back the social vibe of a casino table. The platform handles the streaming and game system, but it’s the human dealer’s gestures, small talk, and eye contact that create an experience no algorithm can copy.
Here are 3 major things that sets online casino live dealers apart in the context of digital activities with human-touch:
Trust through visibility
It’s harder to doubt fairness when you literally see the game unfolding, rather than imagine an RNG behind the scenes. |
Social atmosphere
Chat features let players interact with the dealer (and sometimes each other). This small talk and eye contact make the experience feel shared and lively. The human presence counters the isolation of playing alone against a machine. |
Psychology and engagement
Live dealers set the pace and mood. Their subtle cues (smiles, eye contact, explanations) give players a sense of control and fun. |
These human touches make the games feel more real. Numbers back this up: about 23% of online players now choose live-dealer games, and adding live dealers (together with AI personalization) has lifted player engagement by more than 40% on big platforms. The tech matters, but it’s the human dealer that keeps players confident and entertained.
Service and Healthcare
Automation has entered customer support and medicine, but it can’t replace human empathy. In customer service, AI chatbots handle many routine queries, yet most people still want a person for important issues. Studies show mixed feelings about bots: one survey found 45% of U.S. adults find customer-service chatbots unfavorable – only 19% said bots are helpful. These numbers suggest that even as chatbots improve, many customers trust human agents more, especially when empathy or complex judgment is required.
The same theme appears in healthcare. Patients often view doctors as more trustworthy than algorithms. A landmark study in Nature Medicine found that medical advice labeled as coming from “AI” was rated significantly less reliable and empathetic than the same advice labeled as from a human doctor. In other words, even with identical information, people were less willing to follow advice when they believed it came from a machine. Experts note that qualities like empathy and compassion are fundamental values of a patient-centered healthcare system.
In both customer service and medicine, automation supports the process but doesn’t obviate the human worker. Chatbots can answer simple FAQs, and AI can analyze tests or symptoms quickly. However, people still expect real humans to step in for empathy, explanation, and final judgment.
Creative Fields
In creative work, automation can boost productivity but not replace human originality. Take content creation: studies find generative AI can make skilled workers roughly 40% more productive on tasks within the AI’s capabilities. This suggests AI can handle drafts or data crunching quickly. But that increase came with caveats: when tasks fell outside what the AI could safely do, performance dropped unless people applied their own judgment. In other words, experts still needed to “exert cognitive effort and expert judgment” to get good results.
Recent music industry surveys found that 79% of fans feel human creativity remains essential to music, even in the age of AI. Listeners want original songs, not just algorithms remixing old hits, and they want artists to be fairly credited. Similarly, news consumers show skepticism toward fully automated content. The Reuters Institute reports that 52% of U.S. readers (and 63% in the UK) would be uncomfortable with news produced mostly by AI. Many worry about accuracy and bias – as one expert observed, “people broadly had fears about what might happen to content reliability and trust” when AI is used.
At a creative tech summit, NVIDIA’s Vishal Dhupar noted, “Creative people live their work. AI doesn’t replace that – it enables it.” These points sum it up: generative tools can produce impressive images, music, or text, but ultimately they are instruments in the hands of people. AI expands what we can do (from 3D design to multilingual storytelling), yet the artist’s vision and judgment are still the real source of meaning.
In all these creative and knowledge domains, data show that AI is best used alongside humans. Work gets done faster, but audiences still demand the authenticity of a human perspective.
