How to Detect Most Common Online Scams and Reduce Your Vulnerability to Cyber Crime

Despite all efforts made by Law Enforcement Agencies and many Anti-fraud Organisations to reduce cyber crime to the barest minimum, research revealed that cyber criminals are becoming more sophisticated in their illegal activities, they are developing new fraud schemes every day with changes in technologies.
However, the greatest weapon of all current and intending users of the internet against cyber criminals is “knowledge” about the most common online scams and how to avoid them.
Here are some of the most common online scams and how to avoid them and reduce your vulnerability.
- Phishing scam: This is when an online fraudster impersonates a reputable individual or organisation in order to obtain money, sensitive or personal information of unsuspecting victims. In order to avoid this, make sure you investigate thoroughly before you respond to any email, text message or phone call.
- Beneficiary Scam: In a beneficiary scam, a fraudster calls or sends a message to an unsuspecting victim to notify him that he should help him to receive huge sums of money or parcel containing expensive goods with a promise of a certain percentage of money to the unsuspecting victim. The fraudster will later demand money to facilitate the release of the funds or parcel. When you receive such email, text message or phone call, ignore it immediately.
- Job offer scam: The scammers will send out emails and adverts of job vacancies with attractive salaries and other fringe benefits. They will request applications from different parts of the world through many social media platforms. They will ask for the details of the applicants which they may eventually use to create fake profiles of the unsuspecting victims. They will later ask for money for processing the application or to facilitate the interview. There are many job vacancies on the internet but the only way to differentiate the real ones from the fake is to do a thorough investigation.
- Lottery scam: The scammer will contact the unsuspecting victim through a phone call, email or text message that he won a lottery. He will ask for the personal information of the unsuspecting victim for verification purposes but the main purpose of the scammer is to obtain the victim’s personal information for fraudulent activities. He will later demand some money before the lottery can be claimed. Lottery organisations don’t demand any fee before the winner can claim any money. When you are asked to pay a certain amount, be suspicious.
- Loan scam: Fraudsters send out emails as if they are financial institutions or Non-Governmental Organisations giving out non-interest loans to help unemployed citizens. They will later demand details of interested people and processing fees. To avoid this, do thorough research about any organisation that contacts you for a loan application. Most importantly, visit their offices to ask sensitive questions about them.

Airtel Money Customers Hit 44.6 million, Data Customers Now 73.4 million

In one year, the customer base of the mobile money business of Airtel Africa Plc, Airtel Money, increased by 17.3 per cent to 44.6 million.
This information was revealed by the company in its 2025 Sustainability Report, with 44.2 per cent of Airtel Money customers accounting for women, 6.2 per cent higher than the figure a year earlier, as the Airtel Money agents in its distribution network soared by 23.4 per cent to 1.7 million.
Airtel Africa also disclosed that in the period under review, its data customers went up by 14.1 per cent to 73.4 million as data customers as it empowers individuals and communities, particularly women, to fully participate in the digital economy through inclusive digital services and affordable financial products.
It was also revealed that to minimise the impact of its operations on the environment, 500 off-grid sites were converted to on-grid power, reducing reliance on diesel generators, with 93 per cent of total waste recycled.
The company promised to continue to cut down the impact of its operations on the environment through investment in renewable energy solutions and responsible waste management.
In the area of education, Airtel Africa said 2,176 schools connected to the internet free of charge versus 1,201 schools a year earlier.
By providing free connectivity and online resources to schools, Airtel Africa is helping young people reach their full potential. A growing agent network also supports employment and entrepreneurship opportunities across its footprint.
The telco stated that it recorded 81.2 per cent population coverage across 14 markets, with 36,159 4G infrastructure sites, including more than 15,300 in rural areas. It also sustained its investment of $670 million in network expansion and modernisation to boost speed, coverage and capacity.
“This year’s achievements, from connecting 2,176 schools through the UNICEF partnership to reaching 44.6 million Airtel Money customers with near-gender parity, prove that the power of technology is a catalyst for gender balance.
“At Airtel Africa, we believe to not only expanding networks but we’re also building bridges to education, financial security and sustainable growth for Africa’s next generation,” the chief executive of Airtel Africa, Mr Sunil Taldar, said.

A global technology company, Zoho, has launched Zia Hubs, a solution within Zoho WorkDrive that brings new forms of unstructured business data into the company’s broad portfolio of applications and AI services.
