The President of the United States, Mr Joe Biden, has announced that he no longer plans to seek reelection.
“It has been the greatest honour of my life to serve as your President,” Mr Biden said in a statement on Sunday evening.
“And while it has been my intention to seek reelection, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and to focus solely on fulfilling my duties as President for the remainder of my term,” he added.
He has also announced his vice president, Kamala Harris, as a nominee but she will face other contenders for the Democratic Party ticket.
Mr Biden, whose mental acuity has created worries, faced increased scrutiny from political heavyweights following a recent debate debacle with former President Donald Trump, the ticket holder for the Republican Party.
His exit will throw open a challenge for the Democrats ahead of the November election in the world’s largest economy.
Despite his announcement, he will continue to be the US president.
