Lagos Guber: Group Alleges Plot to Disqualify Mustapha

disqualify Mustapha Olorunfemi

There is a plot to disqualify a former permanent secretary in the Lagos civil service, Mr Olorunfemi Mustapha by the screening committee of the All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2023 governorship election in the state, a support group known as Mustapha4Lagos Agenda has alleged.

The body, which is working for the actualisation of the gubernatorial ambition of the gubernatorial aspirant, claimed that the reason for the plan to disqualify Mustapha is to give the incumbent Governor of Lagos State, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, an easy ride to the government house next year.

Mr Sanwo-Olu wants to serve the state for another term of four years when his current tenure expires on May 20, 2023, but Mr Mustapha also wants the position. However, he must get the party’s ticket to unseat the Governor or go to another party to contest against him.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the head of Mustapha4Lagos Agenda, Bukola Ogundipe, claimed that the strategy is to screen out Mr Mustapha today as he is regarded as one of the biggest threats to Mr Sanwo-Olu.

The group revealed that the politician’s legal team is meeting with the national body of the party to quash the plot.

“We have uncovered a plot to disqualify our aspirant from the race; they know that the only way they can stop Mustapha from getting the party ticket is to make sure he doesn’t participate in the primary.

“Let us forget about the noise they are making, he is the man to beat. We are very certain that their plot will not see the light of the day because Mustapha is clean and meets all the criteria required by the constitution of our party and the guidelines for the elections,” Ogundipe said.

“As we speak, our lawyers have met with the leadership of our party in Abuja to make sure that this evil plot does not see the light of the day. The national body must step up and quash this evil plan.

“Sanwo-Olu has been throwing money around, spending billions to buy people but this is about the future of our state and the leadership of our party in Lagos knows that we can’t continue with the abysmal performance of the incumbent,” Ogundipe added.

By Adedapo Adesanya

Port and Terminal Multiservices Limited (PTML) has disclosed the investment of $50 million to expand its terminal at Tin Can Island Port, Lagos, as part of efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s bid to become the leading maritime hub in West and Central Africa.

PTML Managing Director, Mr Ascanio Russo, made the disclosure on Wednesday during a visit to the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Mr Adegboyega Oyetola, in Abuja.

The investment by PTML, a member of the Grimaldi Group, will expand berthing capacity and acquire additional modern port equipment.

“The Grimaldi Group remains deeply committed to Nigeria and believes in the country’s potential as the leading maritime and logistics gateway in West and Central Africa,” Mr Russo said.

“This $50 million investment is designed to expand our berthing capacity and deploy modern equipment that will enhance operational efficiency, cargo handling, and service delivery.”

He said the upgraded berths would enable PTML to receive next-generation Container/Roll-on Roll-off, Con-Ro, vessels, including the largest Con-Ro ships currently operating globally, directly at the Lagos terminal.

“The maritime industry is evolving rapidly, with larger vessels becoming the standard for international trade. Through this expansion, PTML will be fully equipped to accommodate these next-generation Con-Ro vessels and keep Nigeria competitive for global shipping lines,” Mr Russo stated.

He added that the project responds directly to the Federal Government’s call for increased private-sector participation in port modernisation.

Mr Russo said the expansion would facilitate trade, increase cargo throughput, create jobs during construction and operations, and boost government revenue through higher port activity.

On his part, Mr Oyetola welcomed the investment as a vote of confidence in the Federal Government’s maritime reforms.

“This investment shows our reforms are yielding results and that international investors recognise the opportunities in Nigeria’s maritime sector,” the minister said. “We are determined to transform our ports into modern, efficient, and globally competitive gateways that support economic growth and position Nigeria as the maritime hub of West and Central Africa.”

Mr Oyetola said the government was implementing measures to improve port efficiency, reduce bottlenecks, upgrade infrastructure, and strengthen the ease of doing business.

He said these include port modernisation, deeper collaboration with private operators, digitalisation of port processes, and policies to attract more maritime trade.

The Lagos State Police Command is investigating the delivery of a parcel containing live ammunition delivered to the managing director of First Bank Nigeria, Mr Oluwasegun Alebiosu.

The Commissioner of Police, Lagos State command, Mr Tijani Fatai, confirmed the incident on Tuesday during a press briefing at the command headquarters.

He said Mr Alebiosu reported the case on May 7, noting that two rounds of 7.62mm live ammunition were sent to him through a parcel.

“The managing director reported the matter to the police after a package containing two rounds of 7.62mm live ammunition was delivered on his behalf by his security guard at his residence. The case is still under investigation, and we are treating it with the seriousness it deserves,” he said.

According to him, the parcel was first received by the bank chief’s security guard, who then handed it over to him.

The police commissioner said that operatives have launched an investigation, including forensic analysis and intelligence work, to identify the perpetrators and the circumstances of the incident.

He added that no suspect linked to the crime has been brought into custody.

“Presently, no suspect is in custody. Even though the MD has mentioned some people whom he suspected of being the brains behind it, that is his suspicion, anyway. We are still working on it,” he said.

Mr Fatai noted that detectives are reviewing information provided by the complainant, including details of individuals who may have relevant knowledge of the incident.

He assured the public that the command would keep them informed as the investigations go on, adding that the public should allow the police to carry out their duties.

Makinde Imposes 16-Hour Curfew in 10 Oyo Local Councils Over Insecurity

The Governor of Oyo State, Mr Seyi Makinde, has approved the declaration of a 16-hour curfew in 10 local government areas of the state, as part of measures targeted at tackling insecurity.

According to a memo issued by the Secretary to the State Government, Mr Musibau Babatunde, the curfew takes effect from Wednesday, June 24, 2026.

The movement restriction, between 4 pm and 8 am, lasts for 48 hours in the first instance and affects local government areas bordering the Old Oyo National Park.

The affected local councils are Oriire local government (Headquarters: Ikoyi-Ile), Orelope (Headquarters: Igboho), Irepo (Headquarters: Kisi), Saki West (Headquarters: Saki), Saki East (Hq Ago-Amodu), Atisbo (Headquarters: Tede / Ago-Are), Itesiwaju (Headquarters: Otu), Iseyin (Headquarters: Iseyin), Olorunsogo (Headquarters: Igbeti), and Atiba (Headquarters: Offa-Meta, Oyo).

The development followed a series of protests that rocked the state over the abduction of children and teachers in the Orire Local Government Area in May.

The National Coordinator of the movement, Mr Juwon Sanyaolu, who spoke during the latest protest held on Monday, said the demonstration was part of ongoing efforts by the group to push for the freedom of the victims.

According to him, the protest “is a continuation of actions the organisation has embarked upon since the abduction of children and teachers” in the Orire Local Government Area of Oyo State in May.”

“We will continue to protest for the release of all abducted victims until they are free. We believe that government officials are in the comfort of their rooms and offices while innocent 46 students and their teachers are languishing in the kidnappers’ den.

“We are demanding freedom for all captives in the North, South, West, and East of Nigeria,” Mr Sanyaolu said.

He also criticised political leaders for focusing on preparations for the 2027 elections while insecurity continues to threaten the lives of Nigerians.

“We will not be sitting until 2027. By that time, we won’t even know how many will be alive.

“So that is why we are at the heart of Ibadan in Oyo State, where the abduction took place. The state and federal governments must act, or they will continue to witness mass action,” he added.
