No fewer than 27 protesters have been arrested by the Ogun State Command of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) over their alleged role in the attack on commercial banks in the Sagamu area of the state.
A statement from the spokesman of the command, Mr Abimbola Oyeyemi, disclosed that the suspects were apprehended by operatives of the police on Monday.
This morning, a riot broke out in Sagamu, with angry demonstrators attacking and destroying at least two banks; Union Bank of Nigeria and Keystone Bank.
But Mr Oyeyemi said the situation has been brought under control as security officials are around to quell any form of violence.
“Normalcy has been restored in greater parts of Sagamu now. CP Frank Mba is personally leading police teams and some military men to tackle the situation. About 27 suspects have been arrested,” the statement said.
According to images obtained by Business Post from the protest in Sagamu today, some Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) were destroyed by the mob, while banking premises were ransacked.
