FG Must Support Dangote to Revive Struggling Economy—Otedola

A foremost energy entrepreneur, Mr Femi Otedola, has charged the federal government to support his billionaire businessman friend, Mr Aliko Dangote, to propel “national development and economic independence.”

In a long post on his X (formerly Twitter) handle on Tuesday, he cited examples of countries that backed their entrepreneurs to achieve economic growth, including the United States.

Mr Otedola was reacting to lamentations by his friends that some powerful persons were working tirelessly to ensure his $20 billion crude oil refinery in Lagos would not work.

A few days ago, the chief executive of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), Mr Farouk Ahmed, alleged that diesel from the Dangote Refinery was of a low quality compared with imported diesel.

But Mr Dangote challenged the regulator after tests conducted by the House of Representatives showed that his petroleum product had a low sulphur level compared with imported ones.

“Ours shows a sulphur content of 87.6 ppm, approximately 88, whereas the others exceeded 1,800 ppm. Although the NMDPRA permits local refiners to produce diesel with sulphur content up to 650 ppm until January 2025, as approved by ECOWAS, ours is significantly lower.

“Next week, we aim to achieve 10 ppm, aligning with the Euro V standard. Imported diesel is capped at 50 ppm, but as you have seen, those from the stations, imported by major marketers, fall well outside this standard,” Mr Dangote said over the weekend.

Wading into the matter, Mr Otedola said, “My brother, the Visionary, has built the largest single train refinery in the world, not in Kano, but in Lagos State. He is the owner of the second-largest sugar refinery in the world, also in Lagos State, and the largest cement factory in the world, not in Kano, but in Kogi State. Additionally, he has established one of the second-largest fertilizer plants in the world, soon to surpass the biggest one in Qatar, also in Lagos State. Furthermore, he has built a fertilizer plant in Lagos that already exports globally. Aliko Dangote is a titan that God created specially for mankind.

“Aliko Dangote is also the largest private sector employer of labour in the country, and his companies are among the largest taxpayers. In fact, the Dangote Group often pays more in taxes than the top banks combined. If not for him, we would still be importing cement. His contributions extend beyond industrial facilities to critical infrastructure, having built major roads such as the Apapa Oshodi-Owonrosoki Express Road, Wharf Road, and the Obajana-Kabba Road.

“Countries in the nascent stages of industrialization require visionary leaders. This is why it’s no surprise that the United States was built by the vision and tenacity of a few remarkable individuals—Cornelius Vanderbilt, John D. Rockefeller, Andrew Carnegie, J.P. Morgan, and Henry Ford—THE MEN WHO BUILT America’s industrial landscape. These men left the world without these assets but left behind a legacy that has kept their country thriving generation after generation. Their contributions were immortalized not in the material wealth they amassed but in the enduring institutions and industries they established. These visionaries were also supported by their government, which recognized the importance of fostering local champions.

“Similarly, today’s tech giants like Microsoft and Tesla received substantial support from the US government. For example, in January 2010, the Department of Energy issued a $465 million loan to Tesla Motors to produce specially designed, all-electric plug-in vehicles and to develop a manufacturing facility in Fremont, California to produce battery packs, electric motors, and other powertrain components for powering these innovative vehicles. This initiative is part of broader efforts, such as the federal EV-charging program supported by the infrastructure law known as the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Program, or NEVI.

“In India, the government has been instrumental in supporting business titans like Gautam Adani and Mukesh Ambani. Their companies have received significant backing to grow and expand, contributing substantially to India’s economic growth and global business footprint.

“There are also records of emerging market countries like Vietnam, South Africa, Brazil, and China where their governments have supported local businesses to jump-start industrialization. In Vietnam, the government has provided various incentives to tech companies, fostering a rapidly growing technology sector. In South Africa, government support for the mining industry has been crucial in maintaining its global competitiveness. Brazil has seen substantial government investment in its agricultural sector, transforming it into one of the world’s leading food exporters. In China, government backing for companies like Huawei and Alibaba has propelled them to global leadership in technology and e-commerce.

“In Nigeria, we have our titans, and it is imperative that we recognize and support them. Aliko Dangote has broken every boundary in worldwide business and industry. His contributions are not just a testament to his brilliance but a beacon of what is possible when vision meets opportunity. Supporting local champions like Dangote is crucial for our national development and economic independence. Let us continue to foster and support these visionaries who drive our nation’s progress.”

A cross-border payments solutions company, Grey has expanded its business banking platform to include US Dollar corporate accounts, bulk international payments, and USDC stablecoin support, all integrated into a single system.

The company is positioning itself as a low-cost, faster alternative to traditional international banking, particularly for businesses in emerging markets as it enables companies to open US Dollar accounts, receive global payments, and send payouts to 170+ countries, including bulk transfers, within minutes.

Grey aims to solve common cross-border payment challenges, particularly the high transfer costs that often range between 6 and 7 per cent of transaction value, prolonged settlement cycles that can stretch across several days, and the limited access many businesses face when trying to open and operate foreign currency accounts. In addition, companies frequently contend with hidden intermediary fees and poor foreign exchange transparency, both of which undermine cost predictability and effective cash flow management.

Customs Urges Freight Forwarders to Adopt Automated Licence, Permit System

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has urged freight forwarders to adopt its automated Licence and Permits Processing system to reduce the cost of doing business.

This advice was given by the Assistant Comptroller-General of Customs, Mr Muhammed Babadede, during a stakeholders’ engagement on automation held in Lagos on Monday.

He noted that the reform responds to longstanding demands for faster, more transparent and simpler procedures for industry stakeholders, disclosing that Comptroller-General of Customs, Mr Bashir Adeniyi, has approved the full automation of the service’s licences and permits processes.

“For years, stakeholders dealt with paperwork, long queues and uncertainty from manual processing. Those days are coming to an end.

“This sensitisation is across all zones. The goal is to ensure stakeholders understand the automated system before implementation,” Mr Babadede said.

He said automation would enable applications and renewals from offices or mobile phones, eliminating visits to customs formations, assuring stakeholders of a fair and consistent process, and reducing errors associated with manual documentation.

He said automation would improve record-keeping, supervision and service delivery without increasing pressure on officers.

The Deputy Comptroller-General, Tariff and Trade, CK Naigwan, also represented by Mr Babadede, reiterated management’s commitment to seamless implementation.

Meanwhile, the Comptroller of Customs for Licence and Permit Unit, Mrs Ngozika Anozie, praised the Comptroller-General for driving innovation within the Service, saying the automation aligns Customs procedures with global best practice and strengthens institutional efficiency.

According to her, the reform reflects the three-point agenda of the Chairman of the World Customs Organisation, Mr Adeniyi, centred on consolidation, collaboration and innovation.

She said the system would enhance the ease of doing business in the maritime sector and boost national revenue generation.

“Automation will cut business costs and reduce travel risks for stakeholders

“They will no longer travel repeatedly to Abuja, paying for transport, hotels and feeding to process licences and permits,” she said, adding that the platform would automatically reject fake documents and accept genuine submissions, curbing fraudulent practices.

“The CGC is determined to sanitise the system, and we are committed to achieving that objective,” Mrs Anozie said.

On his part, the Assistant Superintendent of Customs, Mr Ibrahim Usman, said the Licence and Permit Unit operates under the Tariff and Trade Department.

He explained that the unit ensures proper issuance of licences and permits and compliance with import regulations.

Mr Usman said all licences and permits expire on December 31 of their issuance year.

He added that the portal would become fully operational after nationwide sensitisation, with stakeholders duly informed.

Customs Area Controller, Tincan Island Command, Mr Frank Onyeka, thanked stakeholders for their continued support.

He urged them to take the exercise seriously to achieve seamless processing across Customs operations.

Stakeholders raised concerns about online payment integration and potential technical disruptions.

Officials addressed the questions and pledged continued engagement to ensure smooth implementation nationwide.
