Executive Secretary of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), Prof Usman Yusuf, on Monday forced his way to his office in Abuja with some policemen accompanying him.

Mr Yusuf was suspended indefinitely last Thursday by the governing council of the health agency to allow a panel set up to investigate allegations of abuse of office carry out its duties effectively.

It was the second time the NHIS chief was being suspended. Before now, he was removed from office by the Minister of Health, Prof Isaac Adewole, but was reinstated by President Muhammadu Buhari.

This morning, Mr Yusuf, who hails from Kastina State, stormed premises of NHIS in Abuja with some policemen, who shot teargas to disperse some workers of the agency protesting his return to office.

He was escorted to his office by the security operatives after one of his aides broke the padlock to the gate so as to allow his vehicle into the premises.

Business Post reports that Mr Yusuf had earlier said only President Buhari can remove him from office.
