The management of Nigus Enfinity has revealed that from next year, it would start the importing electric vehicles (EVs) into Nigeria.
According to the company, it would make this happen in partnership with Chinese automaker BYD.
Revealing further, the auto firm said it has plans to also start an EV assembly plant in the country by 2020.
Nigus Enfinity stressed that it hopes these plans will meet considerable challenges in the form of affordability issues faced by the majority of Nigerians, an unreliable power supply and non-existent charging infrastructure.
Chairman of Nigus Enfinity, Mr Malik Ado-Ibrahim, while addressing newsmen in Abuja, said several countries across the world have set targets for the ban of petrol-fuelled vehicles with India targeting 2030, and the United Kingdom, 2040, therefore, Nigeria and Africa need to be at the fore of the automotive revolution or risk becoming waste bin for banned vehicles from other countries.
He disclosed that his company was already building a 100 megawatts (mw) solar power plant in Katsina and Adamawa State.
“We are also working with BYD to get a local brand and start an electric vehicle assembly plant for Nigeria from 2020. Gradually we will move to an EV with the African DNA starting in Nigeria,” he said at the press conference.
