There are strong indications that some directors at the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) may have to lose their jobs in the in-house clean-up exercise by the Governor, Mr Yemi Cardoso.

Reports suggest that Mr Cardoso wants to let go of some directors who worked closely with Mr Godwin Emefiele, who President Bola Tinubu believes worked to stop him from going to Aso Rock.

Recall that during his electioneering campaign, Mr Tinubu accused the former CBN chief and some persons of introducing the botched Naira redesign policy to frustrate him.

Immediately after he assumed office on May 2023, one of the first casualties of his administration was Mr Emefiele, who was suspended on June 9, 2023. He is still facing trial at the court.

In September 2023, Mr Cardoso took over the leadership of the country’s apex bank and has not hidden his disgust at some policies of Mr Emefiele, including the intervention funds and loans to the federal government.

In a report by Daily Trust, it was said that at least eight directors may be shown the way out of the central bank barring any last-minute changes.

It quoted one of the affected directors, who asked not to be named, as saying he was ready to leave the organisation without a fight like others have threatened to do.

“We thank God for the time we spent, and the impact that we have made. I will not challenge it. Once my letter is handed to me tomorrow (today) I will gladly take a walk. Life goes on,” the director said.

According to the report, the disengagement of the directors was supposed to have been done shortly after Mr Cardoso took charge of the CBN, but he was prevailed upon.

“So, they could not be sacked at will, as was the case of the Acting Governor, Mr Folashodun Shonubi, and all his deputies,” the newspaper quoted one of its sources as saying.

However, the acting Head of Corporate Communication of the CBN, Mrs Hakama Sidi-Ali, has not confirmed the development as she refused to comment on it.
