The Lagos State Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Thursday, unveiled the Ikosi International Model Market Phase 3 and the Ikosi International Fruits Market Phase 2 in Ketu, Ikosi-Isheri Local Council Development Area of the state.
While speaking at the unveiling of the rehabilitated markets, Mr Sanwo-Olu said the markets would add economic value to the state.
The governor said, “A place that used to harbour miscreants has been transformed into an ultramodern market,” expressing his delight with the Chairperson of the LCDA, Mrs Semiat Bada, and the people of Ikosi-Isheri LCDA.
He added that the unveiling was part of the activities lined up for the winding down of his first tenure and inauguration of his second term.
He stressed that the market units would be affordable and accessible to all, saying that it was meant to touch the lives of citizens.
The popular Ikosi-Ketu Fruit Market in the Ketu area of Lagos was in November 2019 demolished to pave the way for a modern market in the area, which had been set for a completion period of 18 months but faced several drawbacks.
The Ikosi-Isheri Local Council Development Area (LCDA) was awarded the reconstruction of the dilapidated market to a firm of contractors, Total Value Integrated Service Limited.
Prior to the demolition of the market, tension rose as touts in the market hauled bottles at those who came to carry out the order of the state government.
It took the intervention of the police, who sporadically shot teargas in the air, to scare away the thugs and traders unwilling to leave the market.
The governor also commended Mrs Bada for what he regarded as “her good works in the Ikosi-Isheri LCDA.”
Other projects inaugurated across the state on Thursday by members of the cabinet on behalf of the governor included housing estates and jetties.
The governor also unveiled the Ogudu-Alapere Link Road with Bridge and Prince Adesoji Ajose Street in the Ogudu area of the state.
“We promise you a greater Lagos,” the governor said, urging the people to take ownership and take care of the projects unveiled across the state.
