Senate, Reps Extend 2025 Budget to December 2026

Nigeria’s National Assembly, comprising the Senate and the House of Representatives, has extended the implementation of the 2025 Appropriation Act by another three months.

The decision to extend the 2025 budget was taken by the legislative arm of government on Tuesday, September 29, 2026. The extension affects only the capital segment of the budget, and the life cycle will now end on December 31, 2026.

It is now the fourth time the Nigerian parliament has altered the implementation deadline of the capital component of the 2025 budget.

Today’s extension was done at the green chamber of the National Assembly after a motion moved by the House Leader, Mr Julius Ihonvbere, while that of the red chamber followed a motion moved by the Senate Leader, Mr Opeyemi Bamidele, after an executive session and clause-by-clause consideration at the Committee of Supply.

The latest extension means the implementation period of the 2025 capital budget, originally due to expire on December 31, 2025, has now been carried over for another full year.

With this, Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) of the federal government will have an additional three months to implement projects and utilise funds appropriated under the 2025 capital budget.

Business Post reports that in  December 2025, the lawmakers from both chambers extended the deadline of last year’s budget to March 31, 2026, then to June 30, 2026, and later to September 30, 2026, before the latest extension to December 31, 2026. The reason for these extensions, according to the National Assembly, was that some capital projects under the 2025 budget had not been executed.
